Disabled in India
According to the UNICEF report, there are about 250 million children with physical disabilities in the world who are deprived of stimulating and compassionate services in education. Marginalization begins in the lives of many children with disabilities from the first day of their birth when they are cut off from society due to discrimination, and this marginalization gradually increases. UNICEF's core commitment to children in humanitarian action is to outline an organizational commitment to humanitarian assistance for all children, regardless of their status.
It is important to support people with disabilities and their families in carrying out whole life cycle activities normally. Here I have discussed the actual problems faced by the disabled in getting proper education and measures that should be taken by educational institutions for an effective learning system.
Lack of educational facilities for disabled
It is important to provide all the facilities under one roof of the school for special education as required by the disabled for their education and overall guidance but in practice, there are many problems that affected their education:
Shortage of schools: The number of special schools required for children with disabilities is very few and many cannot reach such schools. So it creates problems in the education of such children.
Lack of doctors: According to the rules, the disabled need the supervision of a special doctor, but in practice, the necessary doctor's assistance is not available.
Insufficient funds: The amount of money required for the education of children with disabilities is not fully provided by the government, so it is not possible to implement special education plans for such students at large.
Lack of qualified teachers: There is a severe shortage of properly trained and friendly teachers to teach handicapped children in a scientific way.
Shortage of appropriate materials: In most cases, the educational materials required for the education of children with disabilities are not available in sufficient quantity.
Inferiority: Children with disabilities are disadvantaged as they lag behind normal children in all aspects, with various disabilities. As a result, their educational progress is disrupted.
Lack of parental awareness: Children with disabilities spend a lot of time in the family like normal children. Children with disabilities are always in need of care. Due to a lack of awareness and proper knowledge on the part of the parents, it is not possible to take proper care of these children, resulting in problems in their education. Most parents are apathetic about the education of children with disabilities. As a result, it is not possible to create a path of overall improvement.
Special support lessons in school should be for the disabled
Disability comes in various forms like blind, deaf, dumb, mental or physical disability, etc. Health-related services are therefore essential for them along with education.
The physical and mental, needs of children with disabilities in not similar to normal children, so special education is required to meet all these needs. Every school for them should therefore be designed as a field of academic and special education:
Teach to overcome inferiority and build self-confidence: Children with disabilities always suffer from inferiority due to their handicaps. So it is necessary to make them confident by proper education. Therefore, to bring them back to the mainstream of society, it is necessary to provide special education in schools.
Building self-confidence: Children with disabilities suffer from inferiority because they cannot do normal activities like other normal children and have to be dependent. Constricts itself. As a result, they lose the ability to do what they could do. So the purpose of their education is to increase self-confidence. The sense of 'she can' should be inculcated through school education.
Support for special abilities: Many times, children with disabilities are identified as having more abilities in one aspect, and special education is required to develop that special aspect for earning a living in the future.
Assisting in daily living: The special purpose of this education is to teach useful learning techniques so that one can do one's own work without relying on others for the necessary tasks of daily life. If taught this technique from a young age, they can function almost like normal people in daily life.
Formation of Competent Attitudes: A special objective of this education is to help children with disabilities develop competent attitudes. Creating an attitude that they are an integral part of society, they can overcome all obstacles if they try. Which will help the child to develop into a proper dignified person.
Vocational Training: This education will educate the child to become financially independent. Because if he is financially independent, he will become mentally confident.
Aid in acquiring knowledge: This education will help children gain knowledge and experience. It will develop their advanced thinking power. It will satisfy their emotional needs.
Development of various motor skills: The special objective of this education is to develop the motor skills of students with disabilities according to the type of disability. Apart from this, appropriate measures should be taken to ensure that physical development, physical development, mental development, language development, etc. take place properly. As a result, he will be able to overcome his obstacles easily.
Conclusion
Residential Education Centers for students with special needs have been opened in states by the Government of India. The government has arranged special education for teachers. Technical education is also provided for special students or challenged students. Various scholarships scheme has been initiated for such students. But among the various states of the country, except for West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, success rates were not found satisfactory in other states. Parents should be more aware of this. Because it should be remembered that disabled people can also participate in the development of the country and society if they get a proper education. So various NGOs and private organizations are taking part in the field of special education for the disabled today even though these are costly and we hope that the overall development of this category of people in society will be possible very soon.
