Sociology: general concept and importance

The basic concept of sociology

There have been famous sociologists and anthropologists over the years who have thrown light into significant topics that revolve around society and its being. Sociology in simple words is the study of society and its different works. It is not restricted to graduate students. Many schools have included this subject for higher secondary students. Sociology has been an intriguing subject for anyone who is keen on knowing about the mechanisms of society, behavior patterns, beliefs, etc. For someone who wants to pursue Sociology as a graduate subject, it is very important to know certain basic topics that would form the base of their study.

The French and Industrial Revolution

Both the revolution has been a remarkable time for the development of Sociology. Auguste Comte who is the father of Sociology is said to form the basic ideas about a society after the French revolution. These ideas include freedom, equality. Enlightenment is the era when people were made aware of their human rights, during which they started fighting for what they deserve. Later, the industrial revolution made another development in the subject matter of Sociology. Its contribution was mainly on the working class sector and how it affects society as a whole. The industrial revolution brought in the age of the working class, where the working class suffered from their superiors, fought for their rights however were often on the dead end. Nonetheless, both the French and Industrial revolutions marked the beginning for many sociologists to study different beliefs and ideas that exist in society.

Socialization and it's Agent

Our society cannot work on its own nor can we. We are social animals therefore society and we are dependent on each other. Society runs on beliefs however we are not born into these, we learn these from experience. This process of learning ideas and values is called socialization, where every newborn goes through a steady process of socialization. Socializing agents are the people, situations that influence our beliefs. The agents are primary or secondary according to the time of their influence. Primary agents are our parents and friends. Especially parents form the base of our beliefs that we inherit from them which are later modified with the help of our friends. Secondary socializing agents are mainly social media and school. Every child learns ideas in school that affects their mindset, followed by media that open individual to many ideas and give them the freedom to explore themselves.

Sociology and common science

Sociology is the study of society, it is often argued that anyone can understand society and its function. However, time and again many sociologists have explained the broad difference between sociological perspective and common sense. Common sense views society in a very ordinary way, it rarely sought to find a cause and effect of every function and behavior in society. The commonsensical view of society can be held by every individual. On the other hand sociological perspective is rather broad and extensive, it views society from its roots and sought to find a reason for every possible action that occurs in the society. Common sense doesn't require numerical data to inspect but sociology is dependent on numerical for its outcome. For example, in commonsensical knowledge suicide is seen as an individual act however according to Emile durkiem, a famous sociologist, suicide is a socially caused act, that has both psychological and social force behind it.

Sociology and other Science

Sociology is very similar yet different from other social sciences. It takes heavy inspiration from anthropology. In fact, it was a subpart of anthropology before being identified as a single discipline. Sociology can be said to be an accumulation of all other social sciences. It depends on history to obtain historical data about past society, it depends on economics to conduct a statistical evaluation. Even subjects like psychology, political science have contributed to sociology. Psychology helps in better understanding social behavior and its potential causes and political science helps in understanding the political nature of society along with its effects. Nonetheless, all the major social sciences have a great influence on sociology, sociology as a subject is versatile, it isn't afraid to borrow from other sciences to enhance its study and research.

Conclusion

Sociology helps you to understand the society we live in a more complex way, it makes us see things, behavior, and values in a different light. A sociology graduate can work as Human Resource, Administration, NGO Executives, etc. The career scope of this subject is great therefore anyone who is interested to know about society and get in-depth knowledge about it can surely opt for it.
